Project : Boxing Day madness avoidance

Getting up at 6am to save a few bucks on some newfangled object doesn’t make the sense it used to. Years ago I would get up early for the A&B Sound Boxing Day sale, but that was before online shopping, price protection and competitive prices year round.

We hooked up with some of our regular riding partners for a shuttle run on Forbidden Plateau to help burn off a few of the calories consumed over the holiday dinners.

Snow covered much of the upper trails, but the hardness tricked us into thinking it might be somewhat rideable… It ended up being anything but.

As the elevation dropped so did the snow coverage, and the riding improved. A flat (with a DH tube no less) and a few raindrops later, we returned to the cars filled with joy at our persistence and accomplishment. Looking forward to making this an annual event.

Oh, and I did get the Boxing Day deals I wanted in about 30 minutes at 5pm :)

Epic birthday cake!

Tuesday is not a great day to have a birthday party so we decided to make Saturday the day for friends to get together and celebrate with @mtnbikinggirl.

A few different activities were thrown around but we kept coming back to mountain biking. We hired local mountain bike tour guide Martin Ready of Island Mountain Rides to make easy work of the transport to the top of the hill and enjoyed two top to bottom rides on Forbidden Plateau.

If you’re coming to the Comox Valley and don’t know the trails, check with Martin, his rates are reasonable and you’ll be sure to get the best bang for your buck!

We finished off the day with a bbq and kept up the biking theme with this awesome ice cream cake!

Here’s a quick vid of our day.

Fall – Time to give back

Daylight has left as we rolled the clocks back last weekend. It’s amazing what a one hr shift can do to your days. For the next 4 months we’ll be living in a world of dark afternoons and riding by lights. Of course you say there is weekends, and alas these weekends seem to be eternally rainy here on soggy Vancouver Island. We do live in a rain forest, so I guess you can’t really complain too much with the greenery all around.

Fall becomes a great time of year to give back for the many fabulous days of riding through the summer. Time to put the trails to bed, work in a few new lines and fix a few bridges. It’s trail work time.

Over the last couple of months we have had the unfortunate vantage of seeing great trails lost to the saw blade head of a feller buncher.

While there is sadness in losing a favorite trail, we can rebuild and in the long run forestry will take a back seat to other sustainable uses of our natural greenspaces.

So come join us, grab a shovel, some gloves and give thanks!

Great ride today with some good friends. Trails were a bit damp in spots, but the sun which appeared later in the ride was very welcomed. Beautiful fall colours were enjoyed by all.

Had a fun fall ride last night on Gecko, Green Dome, Cabin Fever, Transmission, Catnip. Great trails and getting better all the time. Transmission has had some serious loving lately with moved stumps, cut out logs and rock work. A nice revival for an old classic Forbidden Trail.

Along the way I took a quick vid of Teresa with my iPod Nano. It really is that dark in there!

If you want epic loops on Vancouver Island, look no further than the 2009 Day 3 BC Bike Race course. Big climbs, great decents, lots of singletrack and a few rivers to cool of in. Logging in the fall of 2009 will affect some of the trails, but new trails will soon emerge.

Had a great ride tonight with Teresa and Katie (the dog). Started with Cabin Fever XC down to the Cabin, turned left and joined up with Dirty Jane. At the top of the climbing section turned right onto Black Dog and then completed the ride with Puntledge Plunge, then Bears Bait and back to the Nymph Falls parking lot via Midline trail. Great ride – awesome sunset.
