Winter has been busy on Vancouver Island. We took off for a week of warm weather and returned with it just in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The world saw our no-snow woes, but no locals were complaining. Most of the trails which normally stay under snow for many more months were clear and rideable. Epic conditions all round. March brought a return to more normal riding conditions with rain and snow, and weather systems which have created an incredible snow depth of almost 700cm on Mount Washington Alpine Resort. Lots of weekend meetings and a bout of the flu have cut into the ride schedule, but with longer days the lights have been put away for another season. April is already looking up with a Black’s Shop Ride this coming Tuesday night.
Look for more regular updates through the spring as trail building, riding and racing become more prominent in the calendar.
What else have we been doing?
- Island Cup Series – planning and marketing for local grass roots racing series on Vancouver Island
- BC Bike Race – new trails, new towns, and more injuries as MASH Director
What else is going on in the Comox Valley?
The Comox Valley is a great place to live and ride. Be sure to put it on your list of “Places to Ride” and if you’ve been before come check out the changes and trail updates on both sides of Comox Lake.
On the weekend we had a break in the torrential rain storms of late, and while cold, we had a great group join up for some Cumberland Trail fun.
Recent news told us that Shaker, Entrails and some other Lower Cumberland mountain bike trails were soon to see logging activity so it was a last chance to ride before the big changes would come. …

Daylight has left as we rolled the clocks back last weekend. It’s amazing what a one hr shift can do to your days. For the next 4 months we’ll be living in a world of dark afternoons and riding by lights. Of course you say there is weekends, and alas these weekends seem to be eternally rainy here on soggy Vancouver Island. We do live in a rain forest, so I guess you can’t really complain too much with the greenery all around.

A bit of rock and fresh dirt in a former soft spot
Fall becomes a great time of year to give back for the many fabulous days of riding through the summer. Time to put the trails to bed, work in a few new lines and fix a few bridges. It’s trail work time.
Over the last couple of months we have had the unfortunate vantage of seeing great trails lost to the saw blade head of a feller buncher.
While there is sadness in losing a favorite trail, we can rebuild and in the long run forestry will take a back seat to other sustainable uses of our natural greenspaces.
So come join us, grab a shovel, some gloves and give thanks!

Great ride today with some good friends. Trails were a bit damp in spots, but the sun which appeared later in the ride was very welcomed. Beautiful fall colours were enjoyed by all.
