Every trail name has a story and Bear Buns is no exception. Terry and Al upon seeing the new Bucket of Blood Clearcut embarked on a new trail in the forest buffer of Perseverence Creek. This naturally flowing trail weaves it’s way along through beautiful trees starting close by the creek, then rising above it’s steep banks then arriving at the new Sykes Bridge for conection to the Teapot / Steamdonkey etc trails.
The story goes that Terry and Al headed up with lunch in their pack. This included a great sticky bun. During the morning session of work they came back to get the bun only to find a bear had happily helped himself to their sticky bun! Alas a name for the trail.
About the Trail
Bear Buns is a fun flowing all-mountain / xc trail. Built in early 2008, the trail hugs the buffer zone of trees all the way down to the old roadgrade near the bottom of Bucket. It joins Bucket for a short distance before Sykes Bridge. Comfortable on an XC bike or really fun on a fully suspended all-mountain bike, watch for some steep outcroppings if riding with your dog or younger riders. Once to the bottom you can either continue down to Broadway or cross over the Sykes Bridge to join up with Tea Pot, Steam Donkey, 42nd Street or Off Broadway.
This trail has been popular with the MOMAR race and trail runners alike.
Getting there
There are a few directions from which you can enjoy Bear Buns. Short and steep, the long and mellow or the long and steep.
Short and Steep – begin at perseverence creek bridge and head upwards along the main road. Turn left on the first main spur approximately 200m above the bridge. Continue on this main road climbing up through the new clear cut. Near the top you will see a path to your right connecting to the upper section of Bucket of Blood. Once you meet up with Bucket, turn left and proceed up the trail for 1oom. Look for the start of Bear Buns going left and the sign hanging just nearby.
Long and Mellow – this spin up the Trent River Main is nice and open and good for a nice workout ride. Head past the east side of Allen Lake and head out the Allen Lake Main and off to the Trent River Main. Ride up till approx 10.75km mark where you will see a road to your Right. New logging in the area has changed this ride in but you will stay on the main roadbed all the way to the lake at the top of Bucket of Blood. Follow around the lake and over the fill dam and up over the rock quarry. This is the start of Bucket of Blood. Continue for approx 3-minutes till you find Bear Buns dropping down on the right side of the trail.
The Long and Steep route is the classic route to Bucket of Blood. Ride up past the DCDH Course and take your first left after Alien Rock. Two options appear – keep riding the road bed switchbacking up past Cupcake or go for the steep Miners trail. Either route will bring you to the same reservoir at the top of Bucket of Blood.
